4 Days 3 Nights

Bukit Hitam to Bukit Kaba

Twin Peaks: Hitam to Kaba

One of the most exciting and adventurous treks we offer, this hike combines two majestic mountains and some of the most unique landscapes in this region. Experience beautiful waterfalls, remote jungle, two different volcanic formations to give you and your friends an adventure to remember.

Day 1:

Begin your journey making your way through coffee and tea fields to arrive at the trail head for Mt Hitam. This first volcano has boiling cauldrons you can hike around and then a breathtaking waterfall close by that has a little pool at the bottom in which you can take a relaxing dip. Then make your way to the campsite near another waterfall with a place to swim and take a bath to clean up before climbing into the tent.

Day 2:

Wake up to the sounds of the waterfall and wildlife and then eat some breakfast before packing up. This day takes you over the peak of Mt Hitam, through a valley near a vast lake, filled with different micro-climates from deep jungle to thick bushes. There is the option to camp in the valley between the two volcanos or push through to Mt Kaba.

Day 3:

Spend this day exploring Mt Kaba and its two incredible and unique cauldrons- one active and one inactive. Encounter the inactive portion first and try and believe your eyes as you see a color you didn’t think existed in nature as the pool above the volcano is bright green. Then make your way to the active volcano where your senses are on overload with smells of sulfur and sights and sounds of activity hissing from beneath the earth’s surface. It is a one-of-a-kind experience!

OPTIONAL Day 4:

*RECOMMENDED*

If you camped in the upper hidden valley, this would be your last day after camping on Mt Kaba and then make the trek down towards Curup and then on to Bengkulu, stopping by the hot springs near Kaba base camp to relax your weary feet, getting them ready for your next adventure with us.

Trail Conditions: Most of the trail generally follows well-defined paths made by local farmers and is usually pretty dry. However, be prepared for land leeches, which can be abundant here in wetter months. Leech socks can help, but you might still be tagged a few times. You can buy a pair of leech socks from us for pretty cheap, and it’s worth the cost! In between the two mountains is more remote and a less-trodden path with a lot of brush, so long pants and shirt are recommended.

Price includes a local guide (limited English skills), permits, lunch, and transport from Bengkulu to and from the trail head. Price per person reduced with more than two travelers, but usually limited to a max of ten people to lessen the impact on the environment.

Seluma Caves (Goa)

Seluma Caves

Goa Seluma offers an experience unique to any other trip we offer. Set in the lowlands of Seluma Regency, you will experience a mix of the bright light of day as you traverse coffee plantations and jungle, as well as the depths of the earth as your journey through the caves.

Day 1:

After arriving by car to the Puguk village, take a 4×4 truck to Lubuk Resam village. Take in the beautiful scenery with the rolling hills and view of the ocean.  Check in with the village chief at Lubuk Resam and begin the 4 hour hike to Goa Besar (the large cave).  Pass mainly through coffee plantations with occasional jungle.  Keep an eye out for animals along the way, like flying lizards, birds, monkeys, chameleons, and the occasional snake.  End by hiking through the side of the cave and setting up camp in the large mouth of the cave.  After a short swim in the river, relax with a cup of coffee and watch the monkeys play in the trees.

Day 2:

After a morning cup of Joe and breakfast, have our guides lead you through the Goa Besar cave exploring every nook and cranny. See bats and cave swallows as you take in the unique rock formations. Afterwards, take a quick dip in the river to wash off and freshen up.  Pack up and begin the hike back towards the Goa Kecil (“small cave”). After about 3 hours of hiking, take a break at the hot springs and soak your feet in the hot water. Take your time, as the Goa Kecil campsite is only an easy 30-minute hike from here. Set up camp and lounge in the river next to the campsite. After dinner, relax to the sounds of nature and get a good night sleep.

Day 3:

In the morning, you’ll head into the “small cave” to explore. Named for the size of the opening, the “small cave” is actually the large of the two inside.  Take your time going through the massive caverns keeping an eye out for cave crabs, bats, and other creatures.  After about an hour or so, emerge from the cave with a new appreciation for the light of day.  Wash off in the river and pack up ready to take the quick hour hike back to the village for the return car ride back to Bengkulu.

OPTIONAL Day 4:

Take an extra day to explore the caves and the surround areas.  Take another night at the Goa Besar and take a short hike up to more caves about 2 hours hike from the campsite.

Trail Conditions: The trail follows well-defined paths made by local farmers through coffee plantations and rice fields with occasional jungle. Leeches are not plentiful and are generally not a problem here. If you are really concerned with getting tagged, leech socks can help. We have some available for purchase for pretty cheap. In the caves, it is advisable to wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Wear something you don’t mind getting mucked up as the minerals and dirt in the caves can often stain clothes. The weather is also a bit hotter here so hiking in shorts (or better yet zip-offs) is not a bad idea.

Price includes a local guide (limited English skills), porter, permits, food, gear, flashlights, and transport from Bengkulu to and from the trail head. Price per person reduced with more than two travelers.
